WHY LOCATION DOESN’T MATTER WHEN PICKING A FINANCIAL PLANNER

Meeting+Your+Planner+Online.gif

You would probably be surprised to know that I have clients that I have never met in person.  I also have clients that I have known since childhood that live on the other side of the country.  We regularly get together at their kitchen tables and discuss their financial plans, the only difference is these meetings are held online (through skype or a webinar) and not in person.

Technology has changed the advice industry.  The days of hand calculating retirement projections, stockbrokers calling you with "hot tips," and driving an hour each way to meet with your Financial Adviser are a thing of the past.  You have more power at your fingertips than ever before.

When choosing the adviser you ultimately want to deal with, you should always want to look for 3 main traits:

  1. Is the Financial Adviser someone that you trust?

    1. Plain and simple, trusting your financial adviser is HUGE! The only way to maximize your relationship with your Financial Adviser is if there is a mutual trust guiding the relationship.

  2. Is he or she competent enough to make the correct decisions for you and your plan?

    1. This topic is better covered here: Why Your Adviser Needs a Professional Designation

  3. Does he or she have the ability to get you from where you are, to where you want to be

    1. There are some really good advisers out there that do not have the tools or training necessary to meet everyone’s unique financial situation.

Once you find the adviser that you trust with the above listed traits, tools like Skype, eMoney, MyPlanMap, electronic applications, and others allow families to receive many of the same services they are accustomed to from their financial adviser, all from the comforts of their own home.  We live in a pretty amazing time!

During these online conversations I have with my personal clients, we still cover all of the same topics I would discuss during traditional face-to-face meetings.  We talk about financial plans, how they are progressing from previous discussions, and what key details of their life have changed so we can make adjustments to their plan going forward.

If you are concerned with the advice you are receiving, or you are looking for someone to help you along your financial journey, consider reaching out to me and my team.  You can work with nearly anyone in the country when you add technology into the mix, if the financial field this is true assuming your adviser is registered in your state.  While I always prefer a face-to-face conversation when possible, there are always times due to distance or convenience when a meeting at your kitchen table on Skype just makes sense.  Then sometimes you just need the success baby to hammer home a point for you...
